TEDx: Why Everyone Should Be a Professional Patient

Olga Lucia Torres was working as a defense attorney in New York City in August of 2000 when she suffered a traumatic brain injury that forced her to undergo years of rehabilitation. Having learned from her own experience in the hospital, Olga redefines the conventional doctor-patient relationship by empowering us to to be advocates and experts of our health. Olga Lucia Torres is an attorney, speaker, writer, teacher, and inspirational story. She was working as a criminal defense attorney in New York City when in August of 2000 she suffered a traumatic brain injury. The injury left her with a seizure disorder, balance problems, cognitive and memory loss, and other side effects. After years of rehabilitation, Olga now facilitates narrative medicine workshops at Columbia University Medical Center and teaches at the CUNY School of Medicine. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
